Chicago, IL – Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez released the following statement in response to reports that Donald Trump is preparing to deploy federal troops to Chicago:
“Donald Trump is once again abusing the power of his office, targeting immigrant families, and threatening Democratic-led cities to score political points. This is not about safety. It is about creating fear. And it is unlawful.
Democrats support law and order, we will not be bullied by a president who does not. Trump is threatening our communities while cutting the very resources that prevent violence in the first place. You cannot defund proven safety programs while pretending to care about public safety. We know this is about political posturing because the states with the highest homicide rates are led by Republican governors, and Trump says nothing about them.
Illinois Democrats are united, and we are prepared to use every tool we have to stop this abuse of power. Governor Pritzker has made it clear there is no emergency here. Attorney General Raoul is ready to take Trump to court if he moves forward with illegal actions. Our congressional delegation has demanded that the White House and Pentagon suspend these plans without delay.
This is how Illinois leads. We will defend the rights of every resident. And we will make sure Illinois remains a state that cannot be bullied or broken by Trump’s fear tactics.”
