Springfield, IL — In case you missed it, a new law, led by Senate Majority Leader Kimberly A. Lightford, will help protect Illinois families and communities from dangerous immigration practices from the MAGA administration. Under this law, new immigration detention centers will not be allowed to operate within 1,500 feet of designated community centers including parks, places of worship, and daycare facilities. While Republicans cheer on ICE agents as they terrorize our communities, Illinois Democrats are working to make sure families and children are safe.
“Our communities should feel safe to play, go to school, and attend church without fear,” said DPI Chair Lisa Hernandez. “Illinois Democrats are protecting our neighborhoods by prohibiting the presence of future detention centers, when current ones have already reported inhumane conditions.”
The list of community gathering places which are now protected by a 1,500-foot barrier from detention facilities includes:
