Washington, D.C. — Today, DPI Chair Lisa Hernandez led an effort in Washington to make the case before members of the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee that Illinois is the best state in the nation to host an early presidential primary election in 2028. As part of the proposal, DPI unveiled a new video showcasing Illinois’ diversity, secure and accessible elections, and proven infrastructure—necessary qualities for a successful early primary.
“Illinois is a true microcosm of America and the perfect analog to test a potential nominee’s capabilities on the national stage,” said DPI Chair Hernandez. “Today, we made the case directly to the DNC that the road to the White House should start in Illinois in 2028. Illinois is a cross-section of urban, suburban, and rural America, a national beacon for labor rights, equality, and reproductive justice, and the heart of the Democratic Party in the Midwest. From Cairo to Champaign, up from the Quad Cities to Chicago, and everywhere in between, Illinois offers candidates ample opportunities to reach voters of all backgrounds. That’s why our message is simple: ‘Start Here. Win Everywhere.’”
