Chicago, IL – Chaos inside the Illinois Republican Party escalated this week after a top Senate Republican leader introduced legislation that would make abortion punishable by death – a sign that the Republican Party is spiraling further into MAGA extremism. Now, Republican leaders are scrambling to distance themselves from the fallout.
The proposal, filed by Senate Republican Caucus Chair Neil Anderson, would charge women with homicide by redefining a fertilized egg as a legal person. A separate bill would reinstate the death penalty, creating a chilling reality in which, under the ILGOP’s agenda, a woman who gets an abortion would face the threat of capital punishment.
In response, Democratic Party of Illinois Communications Advisor Leah Hurwitz released the following statement:
“This didn’t come from the fringe but from the leadership ranks of the Illinois Republican Party. A top Republican state senator introduced legislation that could criminalize abortion and put women at risk of the death penalty.
“Every Republican running for office in Illinois now faces a simple question: Will they condemn this extremism, or will they embrace it? Everyone from Darren Bailey to Minority Leader Tony McCombie and Don Tracy owe voters an immediate answer.”
While Illinois Democrats are focused on lowering costs and protecting freedoms, Republicans continue to double down on the same extremist politics that are tearing apart their party.
