Chicago, IL – In reaction to U.S. Congressman Chuy García (IL-04) announcing that he won’t be seeking reelection, Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez released the following statement:
“For years, Congressman García exemplified what it means to remain grounded in the community you serve. He has led with compassion, an unshakeable love for his district, and a level of relatability you can’t fake–you either have it or you don’t.
“As a proud Mexican-American, the Congressman has proved that you can honor your roots and still be a patriot. He’s demonstrated for many immigrants and Latinos that working in public service is not only possible–it’s the work that ensures communities are seen, heard and advocated for.
“While we know his work is not done just yet, the Democratic Party of Illinois is proud to celebrate his dedication to Illinois’ fourth congressional district. We wish him, his wife, and his children and grandchildren the very best in this next chapter.”
