Belleville, IL — This Saturday, Democratic Party of Illinois was proud to partner with The Doula Lab and Nurture Birth & Health for a film screening of The Ebony Canal, an award-winning documentary addressing disparities in Black maternal and infant health. Post-screening, 13th District Democratic State Central Committeewoman LaToya Greenwood joined the panel discussion focused on clinical realities for Black families, systemic and community-driven change, and health care policy that can keep mothers and babies alive.
“Community and collective action is how we support and advocate for underserved families, and I’m proud to partner on this important event alongside The Doula Lab and Nurture Birth & Health,” said DPI Chair Lisa Hernandez. “From legislation to community events like this one, Illinois Democrats are clear: our current maternal health disparities are unacceptable and we are fighting to turn the tide.”
“This event celebrated Black motherhood in a culturally grounded and affirming space—while addressing head-on the systemic health disparities our community faces,” said Committeewoman Greenwood. “Making real change is going to take all of us—whether it’s through policy, advocacy or through your vote at the ballot box.”
The Doula Lab and Nurture Birth & Health are two Black women-led organizations in the Metro East that empower working families and help reduce heartbreaking outcomes of the Black maternal health crisis.
Along with Committeewoman Greenwood, the panel included National Board Certified Health & Wellness CoachRonda Smith Branch, BA, NBC-HWC, featured mother in the film Mariah Peoples, board-certified OB-GYN Cherese Collins, MD, Certified Nurse-Midwife Talia Whittington, CNM and Founder of Birthing You Doula Services Eboni Hooper-Boateng, CD, CBE, CLC.
