Springfield, IL — After a federal judge ordered Donald Trump to direct funds toward the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for November—Republicans have decided that hungry families will have to make do with only half of their expected monthly food assistance. Trump had the option to make the full payment of SNAP benefits but refused to. Today’s news comes after Attorney General Kwame Raoul successfully helped lead a lawsuit against the Administration for unlawfully and cruelly suspending federal food assistance. In response, Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez released the following statement:
“For weeks, Republicans have threatened to withhold SNAP benefits from nearly 2 million Illinoisans in an effort to score political points during this government shutdown. By deciding to fund only half of November’s benefit, they’ve made good on their promise—they are allowing Illinois children, working parents and veterans to go hungry. Illinois Democrats like Attorney General Kwame Raoul will continue to support our communities, hold this administration accountable, and fight back.”
This comes months after Trump’s billionaire-first budget bill, which made the largest cut to food assistance in history, affecting communities across Illinois. This also follows Trump’s over the top Great Gatsby-themed party for his billionaire friends, hosted just hours before 42 million Americans lost their SNAP benefits.
