Genoa, IL — U.S. Education Secretary McMahon and Erika Kirk visited Genoa and Chicago yesterday as part of the History Rocks! tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary in collaboration with the proudly bigoted organization Turning Point USA. In response, Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez and DeKalb Democrats Chair Anna Wilhelmi shared the following:
“It’s infuriating that the United States government is partnering with a far-right group that teaches young people that misinformation, hostility and bigotry are key to moving this nation forward,” said Chair Hernandez. “In the same breath that the White House claims “history rocks,” they’re dismantling the Department of Education, removing information about the civil rights movement, enslavement, Native Americans, and more. MAGA is saying only positive “white American history rocks.” That’s not the complete American story, and it’s not the only thing Illinois’ young people should learn. DPI stands with DeKalb Dems and Democrats across the state in rejecting Kirk and McMahon’s agenda.”
“DeKalb Democrats want to be unequivocally clear: we do not support Secretary McMahon, Erika Kirk, and this White House whitewashing our history and encouraging misinformation among our community’s young people,” said Chair Wilhelmi. “That’s why we were in Genoa peacefully protesting, being loud and making it known that DeKalb rejects MAGA’s bigotry.”
