New polling data confirms what has been denied by Illinois Republican leaders: Donald Trump still rules the Illinois Republican Party. Trump’s dominance over the Illinois GOP continues despite new revelations from the Jan. 6 committee about Trump’s role in the insurrection, his continued promotion of the Big Lie about the 2020 election, and his praise of Vladimir Putin — among other embarrassments.

According to the recent Sun-Times/WBEZ poll of Illinois Republicans:

  • 86% of Illinois Republicans have a favorable opinion of Trump.
  • 52% said they were more likely to vote for a candidate who supported Trump while only 8% said they were less likely to vote for a candidate who supported him.
  • 67% of respondents believe the Big Lie that the 2020 election results were illegitimate.
  • Trump is leading a hypothetical 2024 GOP presidential primary by nearly 30 points.

Illinois Republican leaders have tried to claim that the ILGOP “is not the party of Trump.” But with Trump playing a major role in every Illinois GOP primary and a pre-primary visit widely rumored, it has never been more clear who is the real leader of the Illinois GOP.

For Illinois Republicans, Donald Trump is still in charge.
