Chicago, IL – Today, Illinois Democratic Party Chair Elizabeth Hernandez released the following statement after 47 Senate Republicans voted against the Right to Contraception Act in the midst of Trump’s attacks on contraception access across the country:
“Illinois women’s right to contraception shouldn’t be up for debate, but today, Republicans in Congress chose to continue to support Donald Trump’s cruel crusade against reproductive freedom. Trump and MAGA Republicans were never going to stop at Roe v. Wade – they’ve made it clear that they will do whatever it takes to rip away every aspect of reproductive health access and bodily autonomy in all 50 states, including Illinois. Women have watched in horror as anti-choice Republicans cruelly enact extreme abortion bans across the country, and now, their access to contraception remains in jeopardy. Illinosians know that another Trump presidency will only mean more bans and more suffering. That’s why they’ll reelect President Biden and Vice President Harris in November so that they can continue to fight to protect and restore reproductive freedom,” said DPI Chair Lisa Hernandez.
Trump and his MAGA allies have made it clear that they want to jeopardize reproductive health care access, including contraception, for women in Illinois:
- Donald Trump repeatedly attacked access to contraception as president. Now he continues to double down, saying he is “looking at” policies restricting access to contraception.
- Trump’s allies have a plan to undermine access to birth control, including emergency contraception and condoms.
- And Trump’s MAGA Republican allies in Congress continue to block the Right to Contraception Act, leaving contraception access in jeopardy.
President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only candidates in this race who are standing with the eight in ten voters who support protecting access to contraception:
- President Biden and Vice President Harris are leading a whole-of-government effort to protect and expand access to reproductive health care amid ongoing Republican attacks.
- President Biden signed an executive order to strengthen access to birth control.
- The Biden-Harris administration continues to expand access to birth control, including for women with and without insurance, college students, service members, and their families.
