The Democratic Party of Illinois (DPI) is seeking an innovative, creative and detail-oriented Communications Assistant to support our communications team and help grow DPI’s media presence.

What Will You Do?

The Communications Assistant is a key role in strengthening DPI’s communications and digital strategy. This position will work closely with DPI’s Communications Director, Digital Director, and communications intern(s) to support media outreach, social media, and digital organizing efforts.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starting team player who is a strong writer with a good sense of humor, experience with photography and videography, as well as an ability to produce quality work under tight deadlines.

Responsibilities Include: 

Press & Communications Responsibilities:

  • Draft party communications including media advisories, and press materials.
  • Monitor news and social media for stories to uplift in Party communications, as well as GOP stories to respond to.
  • Assist the Communications Director with press management, including outreach to media and overseeing the press inbox.
  • Stay attuned to media trends and key political issues.
  • Oversee daily press clips process.
  • Maintain and update DPI’s press lists.
  • Support the communications team in staffing the Party Chair at events.

Social Media & Digital Responsibilities:

  • Draft and maintain social media content calendars.
  • Develop engaging and timely social media copy to drive DPI’s messaging.
  • Assist in managing DPI’s social media accounts.
  • Support video and photo content creation for social media and press.
  • Produce graphics, video clips, and other digital content as needed.
  • Assist with digital organizing tasks, including mobilizing supporters online, amplifying key messages, and coordinating digital outreach efforts.
  • Help draft volunteer engagement emails, texts, and social media to recruit and activate supporters.

Additional Responsibilities Over Time:

  • Draft press releases, talking points, and op-eds.
  • Become the primary manager of DPI’s social media accounts.
  • Join media prep sessions with the Party Chair and senior staff as needed.

Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of experience in political communications, digital media, or journalism.
  • Strong writing skills, with experience drafting press materials, social media copy, or fundraising content.
  • Experience in photography and videography is a plus.
  • Understanding of media dynamics, particularly in Illinois.
  • Familiarity with social media best practices and digital engagement strategies.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Job Details

This is a full-time, hybrid position based in Chicago. The salary for this role is $60,000, commensurate with experience. DPI offers a generous benefits package and opportunities for growth.
