Loves Park, IL — For its third Clippers and Conversation, the Democratic Party of Illinois set up shop at Bettie Jo’s Hairport to hear directly from the greater Rockford area’s Black community in a candid discussion about mental health. Along with community members, the Party and Democratic State Central Committeeman and State Representative Maurice West (IL-67), Rockford City Council Candidate Tamir Bell, Pastor Cam Henderson and licensed professional counselor Dr. Kevin Thomas engaged in an in-depth discussion about economic empowerment, policy, racial equity, criminal justice and more.

“Community engagement is at the core of what we do at DPI, and it’s important to me as Chair that my staff meet Illinoisans where they are,” said DPI Chair Lisa Hernandez. “Saturday’s Clippers and Conversation was about connecting with the men and women of the Rockford area and providing a space that not only normalizes conversations around mental health–but also makes resources available to them.”

“This event was about more than just dialogue; it was about sharing information on the new mental health tax and ensuring our community knows what resources are available,” DSCC Committeeman and State Representative Maurice West. “I’m grateful that a licensed therapist joined us for this grassroots effort, helping to break the stigma around mental health and connect people with real solutions.”

“Saturday’s event was truly a labor of love,” said DPI Constituency Director Uriah Baker. “Folks were already engaging in conversation about mental health and the importance of dismantling stigma, a half hour before the event officially began. This is the work that sets DPI apart–we’re showing up for the communities we represent.”
