Chicago, IL—In response to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics report showing that the economy added more than 256,000 new jobs in December, with the unemployment rate down to 4.1%, Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez released the following statement:

“Friday, Democrats in the White House delivered yet another strong jobs report, as Americans saw their average hourly earnings increase yet again. Over the past four years, 16 million new jobs have been created and unemployment hit a 50-year low. In stark contrast, President-elect Donald Trump is threatening to raise costs on working Illinoisans, send jobs overseas, and unwind the economic progress of the Biden-Harris administration in order to gift tax handouts to the extremely-rich. In 2025 and beyond, Illinois Democrats will work on behalf of working Illinoisans to build on the hard-won progress of the Biden-Harris administration and fight tooth and nail against a Republican price-hiking agenda.”

Our current White House made historic strides in creating an economy that works for working people:
  • In another major step to secure Illinoisans’ financial freedom, this week, the Biden-Harris administration finalized a rule to remove medical debt from the credit reports of millions of Americans.
  • President Biden delivered on his commitment to make health care more accessible for working families by strengthening and expanding the Affordable Care Act. As he leaves office, an all-time high of 24 million Americans have enrolled in health care coverage through the ACA – lowering out-of-pocket costs for millions of Americans.
  • Trump is making tax handouts for the ultra-rich and big corporations a priority in his second term — building on his shameful record of rigging the economy against the middle class for the ultra-rich and big corporations in his first term.
  • Trump’s first term agenda created new incentives for companies to ship American jobs overseas.
  • In a move that would hike costs on millions of Americans, Trump has doubled down on his extreme agenda to repeal the ACA as president.
