Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Rep. Robin Kelly released the following statement regarding the bipartisan confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court:

“Today, history has been made, as Ketanji Brown Jackson has been confirmed as first Black woman on the U.S. Supreme Court. Our country has seen Judge Jackson’s brilliant legal mind, impeccable character, and sterling reputation on display since she was nominated by President Biden. I want to commend Sen. Dick Durbin for his smooth shepherdship of this confirmation process and I thank Sen. Tammy Duckworth for her outspoken support of Judge Jackson.

“Not only will Judge Jackson make an exceptional Supreme Court Justice, but she will finally bring desperately needed representation to the highest court in the land. Black women are underrepresented in clerkships, judgeships, and other legal professions, making up only 3% of the federal judiciary. While there is still more work to do, Judge Jackson’s confirmation is a giant step in the right direction and will help to create a fairer, more equitable democracy.

“While we celebrate this historic appointment to the federal Supreme Court, we also have important seats on Illinois’ state Supreme Court up for election this year. The Democratic Party of Illinois will continue to fight for our values to be represented in the judiciary at every level and to protect the fundamental rights of all Illinoisans.”
