Springfield, IL –Illinois Democrats had a lot to celebrate at the State Fair this year: guaranteed paid leave, lower prescription drug costs, expanded reproductive rights, and a fifth consecutive balanced budget that makes historic investments in education, public safety, and economic development. In races up and down the ballot in November and in April, voters certainly took notice, keeping all statewide offices blue, flipping a Congressional seat, expanding statehouse majorities, electing two Democrats to the IL Supreme Court, and protecting school and library boards from right-wing extremism.
As party leaders, volunteers, activists, and voters came together for Governor’s Day, it was clear that Democrats are prepared to forge a united path forward to continue delivering for Illinois.
“Strong and effective leadership from Governor Pritzker, President Harmon, Speaker Welch, and all of Illinois’ Democratic officials has restored Illinois’ fiscal health, made the state a beacon for reproductive freedom, and uplifted working families every step of the way. The IL GOP claims to be “for working families,” yet their votes against an increased minimum wage, paid leave, and access to affordable health care tell a very different story. Illinois Republicans can’t decide what their own party should look like, so it’s no wonder they lack a clear vision for the state,” said DPI Press Secretary Allison Janowski.
At their State Fair rally, Republicans danced around what will surely be contentious GOP primaries and their mounting disarray. The IL GOP continued their attempts to flip flop on vote by mail, following failed lawsuits and years of peddling lies about election fraud to voters in an effort to undermine American democracy. Unsurprisingly, GOP Leaders also kept mum on the growing list of charges against former President Donald Trump.
Governor Pritzker summed up the clear contrast between the two parties best: “Republicans demagogue, Democrats deliver.”
