Chicago, IL – In response to Illinoisans showing up in the thousands yesterday to protest the Trump administration’s despicable immigration policies—including a travel ban against citizens of 12 mainly African and Middle Eastern countries, the surprise detainments of immigrants in Chicago and nationwide ICE raids, the Democratic Party of Illinois released the following statement:
“Trump’s immigration agenda was never about safety or the rule of law. It was about fear. It was about control. It’s about making it clear who he and his MAGA cult believes belongs in America and who doesn’t. It was about targeting immigrants to divide our country.
“Here in Illinois, we see these policies for what they are. They tear families apart. They destabilize neighborhoods. They kill small businesses. They make people afraid to go to work, pray in pews, take their kids to school, or go to the doctor. And through it all, Illinoisans show up by marching and organizing. We protect each other.
“Trump was never going to just target violent criminals, he is indiscriminately going after everyone—just like Illinois Democrats anticipated he would. Trump is racist, cruel, and he’s petty. His administration is more than happy to use human suffering in an ego-fueled attempt to win a political battle. He breaks families apart, Illinois Democrats work to uplift them.”
