After endorsing far-right extremist Darren Bailey this summer, Tom Demmer, GOP candidate for State Treasurer, is continuing his pattern of dodging his own endorsement in an attempt to rewrite history.
In an interview with WGN’s Paul Lisnek, Demmer refused to answer for his endorsement of the far-right extremist, saying: “I’m really focused on my own race.”
But Demmer wasn’t so focused on his own race when he broke with top Illinois Republicans to endorse Darren Bailey, saying he thinks the Trump-endorsed candidate would “make a good governor.” Even after Bailey’s heinous comparison of abortion to the Holocaust, Demmer stood by his support of the far-right extremist, saying: “We have this choice between reelecting Pritzker, or making a change going in a new direction. I think we need to go [in] a new direction.”
According to Demmer, that “new direction” is Darren Bailey — the man best known for his opposition to abortion without exception, his comments encouraging Illinoisans to “move on” from the Highland Park mass shooting, and his record of campaigning with insurrectionists.
After going out of his way to throw his support behind Darren Bailey, it’s time for Tom Demmer to own up to his own words. As he desperately tries to rewrite history, voters know the truth — and they’ll remember it at the ballot box.
